The Menahkwesk Zine Archive (MZA) aims to be a space run by a collective of zine readers, zine makers and other enthusiasts who strive to make zines accessible for the local community.
Zines are an important and open medium of expression. A D.I.Y. ethos, decentralized distribution and no barriers to entry make them extremely versatile and hard to censor. This has led to zines being a staple for radical movements, political education, art and punk subcultures, queer and BIPOC communities, and other ‘deviant’ streams of society. We believe they should be cherished, protected, and promoted.

We currently have shelves at the Saint John Arts Centre (20 Peel plaza) and ArtsLink NB (94 Prince William st.). All zines are free to take! We also distribute zines at various community events, please reach out if you’d like us to bring zines to an event.
MZA is still a fledgling collective. In the future, we hope to have a physical and digital space for browsing and sharing our collection. We also hope to offer skill share sessions, zine making workshops and other communal spaces for creative expression!

FAQs
We are still working on an online setup, but it should be up soon!
Please use the above email to let us know if –
1. There are mistakes in attribution or any other details
2. If you’d like us to remove your zine from our collection or to stop distributing it
3. If you have an updated/different version and would like us to replace the current one
We have a mix of physical and digital donations, local creations, purchases from various events and random downloads from other archives on the internet.
We are funded by occasional, individual donations and run on a very tight budget. If you’d like to financially support our work, please use the link above to make a donation.
Material costs and printing for the most part. Depending on how much we have, we might also use it for transportation costs, food, or other logistics for our volunteers. In some cases, they could help develop zines and pay artists.
Please use our email to reach out to us and discuss volunteering options. The work involves some combination of finding, cataloging and tagging zines, tabling at community events, helping keep our zine shelves populated, printing or scanning zines, and various aspects of creating zines.
We are happy to table at free or PWYC events that are organized by a local community group or person. We DO NOT table at events put on by or for politicians, large corporations or religious groups. We also DO NOT table at events that explicitly or tacitly support racism, transphobia, Zionism or misogyny.
Please use our email to invite us, we will try our best to make it. We are happy to table for free but would appreciate if you could cover transportation or other logistics costs. We would also appreciate a donation to MZA if you can afford it.
There are likely many, in names or tags or authors or other details. We are a small team and chip away at these slowly. Please let us know what you found using our email.
Please send us an email with the copy of the zine or a link to it. Add as much information as you have – author name, publisher, date, title, etc. This makes the cataloging process easier.
We probably don’t have enough on a lot of important and fun topics. If you have a zine to contribute, please do so!
We don’t. However, we distribute free zines at multiple locations throughout the city. Currently, you can find MZA shelves at the Saint John Arts Centre (20 Peel plaza) and ArtsLink NB (94 Prince William st.).
If the author isn’t already listed, assume that the zine is intentionally anonymous. Please don’t go digging.
Please email us and we can come visit to discuss further!
We don’t. Part of the reason for this project is to enable more engagement with and creation of physical media. This involves encouraging people to spend less time on screens and social media.
Pretty much what is spelled out at the top of this page. We also use this as a guideline. Please use our email if you have further questions!
